Which would you recommend? The Canon Powershot G9 or Nikon Coolpix P5100?
I'm looking for a compact that I can carry around all the time (instead of my dslr kit). Whilst I love my dslr I want a camera that has more spotinaeity but has more features than a standard point and shoot compact. any advice?
the g9 is a much better camera

Nikon!!! They specilise in making camera's whereas canon does not! It is thus likely to be better! At least….id say so

Reviews from Which?
Canon PowerShot G9
When we tested the PowerShot G7 a while back, we came away impressed with pretty much everything apart from the image quality – while it was ok, it wasn’t special enough to make the G7 a Best Buy.
The G9 is the successor – with a new, slightly larger sensor and a whopping 12.1Mp to try to rectify that.
This camera is feature-rich, as you’d expect from Canon’s flagship compact model.
There’s a 35-210mm lens with image stabilisation, and a RAW format. Digital cameras take jpeg images by default, but DSLRs and advanced compact cameras can take RAW images too.
This can give you ultimate image quality, but the downsides are that the files are very large, and they need a fair amount of processing using special software on the computer afterwards.
The G9 also has face detection, enhanced with Face Select and Track. This allows you to manually select and track a single face in the crowd, on a stage or a beach for example, and keep it properly exposed and focused – all for better photos of your loved ones.
A large 3in LCD screen at the back is another enhancement over the G7 (which had a 2.5in screen). We hope to have full test results on the G9 soon. In the mean time, you can buy it for about £430.
Nikon Coolpix P5100
The Coolpix P5100 is Nikon’s new flagship model.
It sports 12.1Mp and a top ISO setting of 3200 for better, sharper dim light photos without flash.
You also get image stabilisation to again reduce blur, and face detection for better people shots. At the back, there’s a 2.5in screen.
The zoom range on the P5100 is only 35-123mm. While ok for most general purpose photographs, 123mm is not very “long” so you won’t be able to zoom in a huge amount – distant bird on tree type shots won’t be very easy.
As a top of the range camera, we would have liked to have seen a longer zoom.
However, you can buy and attach lens converters on this camera which helps a bit. You get manual modes such as aperture and shutter speed priority modes, and the ability to add an external flash for more flash power.
We look forward to testing this camera fully and hope and expect image quality to impress. In the mean time, you can buy it for about £300.
