What do you guys think about the canon powershot g9?
thinking of buying one
It's a very good camera. In fact, it's the point and shoot that I use. (I also have a number of Canon SLR bodies both film and digital.)
I like the ability to shoot RAW (though with the CHDK firmware, lots of other Powershots can shoot RAW). I love its size. It's much smaller than the G3 I upgraded from. I used to use a SD800 IS for when I needed a small camera. The G9 is small enough that I can take it just about anywhere. I can also use it for street photography without drawing a whole lot of attention to myself. It has a very usable range of 35-210mm (6x zoom). It's picture quality is good, it has a decent lens on it, and it has manual controls on it.
I don't do a whole lot of underwater photography, so the expense of a case for one of my SLRs isn't justifiable for me. However, the underwater case for the G9 is. This allows me to introduce another element to my shoots. (Take the camera underwater and do a "trash the dress" shoot.)
I also like that it has a hot shoe on it, so I can use my Speedlites and PocketWizards with it, if need be.
The only thing I don't like about it is that with recent G series cameras, the lens is slower than it used to be. Typically the lens was f/2 - f/3 over its range. Now its f/2.8 - f/4.8. I also don't like that they used to have a wireless remote shutter release, but the G9 doesn't anymore. Some people have also complained that they don't like that it no longer has the swivel LCD. I don't find this much of a problem, but some do.
People will usually recommend an SLR over a camera like this. Especially with cameras like the Nikon D60 and Canon Digital Rebel XS, almost similar in price. The SLRs are better cameras, but there is more cost associated in them. Plus, the Quality to Size ratio is really good in my opinion for the G9 and hard to beat.

Good size, allows you to use manual features… it’s a good camera to learn on. I’ve thought about getting one myself to put in my purse for the times I don’t want to carry around my DSLR, but I’ll probably wait for the price to drop some more.

It is built like a brick, and feels like one.It is a compact but is larger than most so called compacts.
It does have scene modes and auto modes as well, so if your just starting you will be able to take good pictures from day one.
At low light levels it has noise issues, but all compact camera’s suffer from this.
It is probably one of the best compacts out there.
I like mine but will buy a spare battery for it.
It has a time lapse feature and that is way cool!
It can be carried discreetly, something that is hard to do with a dslr.
It takes very good pictures,FOR A COMPACT. The dslr camera’s still take bettor pictures. But this camera really narrows the gap.
If you are really into photography and want a compact and cam afford it this is the one to get. Just remember within a year there will be another model the G-10 or whatever they name it.
