Questions about canon powershot G9..?
I am looking into buying a new camera, for my photography (i'm just an amateur really). But i want something that's going to give me quality pictures. I am looking at a number of different cameras, but so far, I like the canon powershot G9 the best. i am on a budget, but i can get the fancy accessories and lenses later.
I am looking for some input on this, and i would also like to know if the canon powershot g9 takes grainy photos, etc..
If you have any other suggestions on cameras, let me know.
It's your choice, but for exactly the same money, you can have a Nikon D40. This is a digital SLR, so it's a little bit bigger than the G9, but the image quality of a DSLR will beat a point and shoot (G9) any day.
You mention buying additional lenses in the future and you should be aware that the G9 does not really take additional lenses, so I think you're thinking about an SLR anyhow. The G9 doe not have interchangeable lenses, but I see one authorized add-on teleconverter lens that gives a 2.2X magnification. These things are fraught with compromise, though.
Please look into a D40 before you spend the same money on a G9.

The G9 has been out since November and has been proved to be a very popular and reliable camera. I would consider this to be a good choice for amateur photography.

Many professionals and enthusiasts use Canon PowerShot G9 for situations where SLR isn't suitable. In short, it is frequently cited as the best point and shoot camera in production under $1000, with among the best-in-class image sharpness, RAW shooting mode, great build quality, effective image stabilizer, very good movie mode, and fast shooting performance.
Images get very grainy between ISO speeds between 800 and 3200, but it will produce very good looking images at or below 400.
That said, if you don't need portability, you can get entry level SLR such as Nikon D40 for same price. And for about a hundred or two more, you can get Nikon D60 or newly announced Canon Digital Rebel XS (EOS 1000D).

If you're worried about noise (grain) in your images, then the G9 is not the camera for you, because it really doesn't have very good high ISO performance. Even at ISO 200-400 (and lower), images start to deteriorate due to in-camera noise reduction. To get the most of the G9's image capability, you will ALWAYS need to shoot in RAW.
If you are prepared to buy add on lenses at a later stage, then I would agree that going just one step higher (to an entry level dSLR…either Canon or Nikon) would be a far wiser choice (not to mention, you will have higher image quality, performance and high ISO capability).
p.s. the newly announced entry level (and very affordable), Canon EOS 1000D looks good…
