Canon Powershot G9 vs. Canon EOS Rebel XTI?

Which is the better camera overall?

Canon Powershot G9 vs. Canon EOS Rebel XTI

Any experience with either, and why you though it to be better or worse, would be greatly appreciated!

Powershot is a point and shoot camera. Simple to use. Smaller.

Digital Rebel XTi is a (digital) single lens reflex (SLR) camera. You can change its lens. It's bigger.

The sensor of a point and shoot camera is almost always much smaller (there are exceptions, but doesn't apply to this model).

Smaller sensor–usually means noisier photo. There is so much room they can squeeze all those "pixels" onto a tiny space, if you know what I mean.

For an SLR, you can "expand" the system by buying more lenses, in the future. It's much more difficult to do that with a P&S. First of all–its lens does not come off and the only thing you can get is an adapter that fits in the front. One is as good as an ice cube.

If you are serious about photography, you probably want to get a dSLR. All models can be put in manual mode (which lets you set everything yourself), or you can override its settings (which is very handy by the way). Most P&S you can't do that.

p.s. I'm not referring to a rangefinder camera. One like Leica can cost much, much more than a typical dSLR.

  2. David M Said,

The Rebel XTi is far and away a better camera. You can not compare a point and shoot to a DSLR.

The G9 is a great point and shoot camera but it is still a point and shoot.

The XTi is a DSLR which means that it can use interchangeable lenses. The lenses for DSLR's are far superior to those of point and shoots. The XTi also has a sensor that is 10-15 times larger than that of the G9. Larger sensors mean better dynamic range and better performance at high ISO settings. In addition to that a DSLR has faster more accurate auto focus, better faster processors and analog to digital converters. They also have virtually no shutter lag.

If you want something small and easy to carry around then the G9 is a very good choice but performance wise it will never equal an SLR.
