Canon Powershot G9 lens issue?

I’m having an issue with my G9. I can’t see anything through the LCD, and when I take a picture, it comes out blank/black. All of the settings show on the LCD, along with all of the previous pictures that are on the memory card, so I know that it is not an issue with the LCD itself. I’ve reset the entire camera to try to remove any old settings that might have accidentally taken effect, but that didn’t make any difference. Anyone know what might be going on? Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a CCD or CMOS failure. CCDs and CMOS are the eye of the camera, this component may have failed or the connectors became damaged.

Fairly expensive repair if this is the case, and as the screen is still working for other functions, it points to that…

Check the control dial isn’t set to manual and small aperture/fast shutter/low iso combo, switch it to p mode or Av mode and see how it goes.

Unfortunately it does sound like the image device is goosed which isn’t good or cheap news I’m afraid.

If your camera is beyond repair and you’re considering replacing it, don’t be tempted by the G10. Go for the G11 instead. I replaced my G9 with a G10 and have regretted it since. The large resolution of the G10 is a curse not a bonus and the images are very noisy. Good luck with your G9 though.
