Which digital camera? Canon Ixus or Powershot?

I currently own an Ixus V3, which is rather old now! I would like to replace it in time for my next holiday, but I don't know which. I like compact cameras, that'll fit in my pocket (safer when being a tourist!), but I'd also like it to take a decent shot if my aim is right! I'm not much of a photographer, but I do get lucky with what I catch sometimes. I like to have a decent zoom and ease of use is important. I'm happy to pay up to £200.

Any suggestions?

I have a Powershot 700 and my girlfriend has an Ixus 800. We are both absolutely delighted with them. They both take great photos. The Powershot is a bit more programmeable and has a better optical zoom. The Ixus is easier to use and smaller.

I guess it really depends what you want to take photos of. They are both good cameras but I'd probably go for the Ixus based on useability.

One other factor is that the Ixus comes with a unique battery style (my girlfriend's had a charger included) but the Powershot will take standard AA batteries if you're nowhere close to your charger.

i don't know about the models you have listed, however i can recommend the "Fuji Finepix S5700" A recent replacement/ addition to my now old and heavy brick of a digital camera the kodac dc215zoom a horrible camera compared to the finepix.

the s5700 is a prosumer camera with 10x optical zoom and 5x digital zoom, 7.1 Mega pixel and coming down in price all the time. the image stabilzation is fantastic. set the camera to auto and you never have to worry about a shot.
you have macro modes, manual focus modes if you really want to get creative.
Plus it has the option to record up to an hour of video. ok the built in microphone is not brilliant and you can not add an external microphone to it; but then this is designed as a stills camera not a movie camera, it is aspiring to be a little more than it is (like all of us).
the current price i've seen for the finepix is around the £150 mark if you pay postage and order your XD and or SD media card for recording your pictures. depending on your need you can set the recording quailty to one of several. if you are planning to only view the pictures via your computer or a digital picture frame than you can use any and all the settings without noticable difference on a 19" screen at 1280 x1024 screen resolution. Paper prints = then i'd recomendbest as you never know what picture you print and a friend says hey thats good can i get a copy or enlargement.

if you want to get creative with this camera out in the field you can add filters and lense via the 46mm threaded lense housing.

you have the option to add accidental damage cover for a small fee to your guarantee which also extends the guarantee for upto five years (i think).

amazon.co.uk or dabs.com both had or have this camera and accessories.
though be prepared for a wait here in the uk, goods said to be in the post last monday evening are still yet to arrive almost 7 days after they were posted and now four days after the one to three days promised delivery time. i should add i'm waiting for computer components not camera accessories, the principle is the same though dodgy dare i say no delivry from royal mail and not for the first time.

you may like to consider with your camera the "HAMA Star 63 Tripod".
you may also like to consider a "Tripod dolly" (a specially designed set of wheels) for use with your tripod to allow for tracking shots if you do any semi professional photography or movie making.

i hope this helps you a little, even though it is not the camera make and model you were thinking of.
fuji do a range of smaller compact cameras but not capable of the 10x optical zoom (the reason for my purchase of this camera). to my knowledge all good if not great cameras.
