canon lens for sports - question?
I have a canon Rebel which I bought for Christmas last year. My first experience since the 70’s 110mm pocket camera, then digital age came in with pocket cameras and now I am back to SLR’s after 30 od years… Anyway, I developed some interest in getting results at taking pictures at my daughter’s basketball games in dim lights (are they saving energy? good lord!!) so I have been looking for lightweight, USED, big aperture zoomers. I have seen a few with an appt of f4 135mm-200mm lenses on eBay for a fairly good price. I have no interest in 200mm but maybe 80mm or 120 or less. Now, is the lower the number the more light it lets in? (I forgot!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Like is an f3.5 a wider aperture than an f4? More light gets in? Or is it the other way around? Dang it, I am cold!!!! haha Anyway, what do you recommend? Teach - and…. help..
I have a budget of about $300 - I have a Canon rebel… not sure if I can even set the ASA on this thing. its fully automatic.. I just set it to the little "jogger" icon and I assume it is for fast photography. Now you know how advanced I am…
the lower the number, the bigger the aperture, the more light that gets in…
it also means heavy and expensive…
some examples for the Canon
70-200mm f/2.8
300mm f/2.8
400mm f/4
Cheapest:
70-300mm f/3.5-5.6 <— this is a very slow lens; but should have enough reach to capture your daughter up close. try the highest iso and hope that is enough.
There are some other primes that might interest you.
85mm f/1.8
85mm f/1.2
135mm f/2
