Canon Digital Pocket Cameras

Hello,

I am in the middle of trying to look for a decent size camera that can fit in my purse, or pocket. I currently have a old version of a Nikon Coolpix that I bought a couple years ago, and it’s already dying on me.

What I would really like in a small camera is:
- decent battery life
- great zoom for camera and video
- crisp non-blurry pictures/video
- decent/good sound quality

Any suggestions?
I’ve also been looking at
Nikon Coolpix S710
Nikon Coolpix S610
Canon Powershot SD970IS

Any reviews on those? Or any other suggestions?

If small size is most important, consider the Panasonic Lumix DCM-ZS3.

Both are very good cameras with the Canon edging out the Panasonic in terms of photo quality. The Panasonic has better video capability.

Can I shoot smaller pictures than 4000×3000 pixels with the powershot g9? I don’t mean taking the pictures and then resizing them on my computer….I mean taking a picture that is smaller automatically with the camera. I need smaller shots and/or smaller dpi.
It might be picasa changing the dpi because of its settings (I’ve just heard this). How can I change the settings in picasa to the correct dpi?

Of course you can. You obviously haven’t looked in your User Guide (pages 78-79).

However, it’s never a good idea to shoot at a lower resolution. Always shoot at the highest and then resize (a copy) if needed.

Because why bother getting a 12MP camera and then only shoot in 8MP, 5MP or 2MP? (which is what the G9 allows you to do). It doesn’t make sense.

thinking of buying one

It is good in the sense it gives you more control than the typical point and shoot.. i.e. control of shutter and aperture, plus Canon FINALLY put RAW capture back into a point and shoot.

BUT

It is STILL a point and shoot… with all the cons that go with it, mainly the tiny sensor size. This will NEVER give the all around results of even a 6 MP DSLR. High ISO performance of the G9 is still bad, and even with control over aperture, you will not be able to create the kind of shallow depth of field that you can with a SLR.

Sorry, but no tiny sensor point and shoot with an equally tiny lens is ever going to equal a DSLR… it is just plain old physics. Get it if you want, it is better than most point and shoots, but you are STILL buying a point and shoot.

Personally I would rather spend MUCH less on a typical point and shoot for sticking in a pocket, and spend the rest of my money on a good DSLR.
