Canon Digital Pocket Cameras

I have a Canon Powershot sx100IS and do not know if it has raw, if it has how do I set it? What are the advantages of raw? and do I need a special program to pass it to my computer?

You have a nice camera, however, it does not support RAW. If you want a Point and Shoot camera that support RAW look into buying the G10 if not just move to a DSLR something like Xs or XSi for beginners.

If you was able to shoot RAW the advantages are way to many to list. Overall ability to edit and correct your files. Something you cant do at will with a compress file like .jpg! You’ll be able to fix blemishes, white balance, color temperature, exposure, etc etc etc. It’s great if you want to break free and get creative with your pictures ..

Lastly, yes you need an additional program for this. However you will get a freeware with the disk you received in the camera. Or you can purchase programs like Light Room which I use and totally love and recommend!

I am looking for a relatively good digital camera without spending much money, please answer the following questions if you can or just a couple, thanks i appreciate it.

Is the S51S worth the money?
Does it have a good picture quality?
does it take okay videos? (not perfect, but decent)
does it work well with rechargeable batteries? (someone on the net said it doesn’t)

The S5 IS rates quite well for a superzoom point & shoot camera. It’s biggest plus is it’s 12x optical zoom lens.

It has very good image quality, provided you use a low ISO (80-100) and you have plenty of light. So, outdoors is where it will perform the best.
For low light, interior shots…it’s not the best performer because it has poor ISO capability, which is quite common with many compact digital cameras.

It takes very good quality movies and records them in stereo sound.

Battery life is very good when using rechargeable NiMH batteries (up to 450 shots when using 2500mAh capacity batteries). Using higher capacity batteries will allow even more. These type of batteries drain when not used, so make sure you give them a charge if you haven’t used the camera in a while.

I think you will be happy if you bought it. It’s not perfect, but not many cameras are. Just don’t expect fantastic quality images in lower light, though.

I suggest you get at least a minimum of 2-4GB of fast memory (Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III is excellent). Each 1GB will allow approx. 270 high quality images (Superfine/Large). The camera’s default compression is Fine, so you will need to change it to Superfine for the least amount of image compression (which is better). Any brand new memory card should be Formatted (in the camera’s Menu) before you use it the first time and everytime you need to delete all images from it.
